Product scope changes. This comparison intentionally avoids volatile price tables and focuses on the architectural boundary each vendor currently advertises.
Choose UsageBox when
You already have Stripe, an ERP or your own billing code and want usage collection, dedupe, raw history and rollups to remain portable.
Choose a billing platform when
You want the same vendor to own pricing rules, credits, contracts, invoices, tax or customer billing workflows as well as the meter.
Prefer open source when
Self-hosting, source inspection or extending the billing engine is a hard requirement. OpenMeter and Lago both advertise open-source deployment paths.
Watch ownership risk
The category consolidated quickly: OpenMeter joined Kong, Metronome joined Stripe and Orb joined Adyen. Portability matters even when the product is excellent.
The UsageBox trade-off is intentionally narrow
UsageBox does not try to win a feature-count comparison against a billing suite. It records the quantity your application says happened, makes transport retries safe, preserves the accepted events and produces explainable monthly rollups.
That means you still need pricing and invoicing somewhere else. In exchange, changing the biller does not require moving the usage ledger at the same time.
